Summary

The Policy Relevant Infectious disease Simulation and Modelling (PRISM2) network is offering up to five scholarships to attend a five-day modelling short course held at St Anne’s College, Oxford in September 2019. The course is aimed at participants with a basic understanding of infectious disease modelling and an aptitude for the R programming language. On completion participants will be able to write and analyse the dynamics of a simple mathematical model and use it to consider cost and intervention scenarios. The scholarships will support course fees and travel and accommodation costs with students from the Asia-Pacific region strongly encouraged to apply.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Mathematical modelling is being used with increasing frequency and scope to address questions about infectious diseases both in terms of basic science and in terms of national and international policy-making. Mathematical modellers arrive at the discipline from STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), clinical and other backgrounds. Mathematical modelling is an interdisciplinary activity which benefits from the broad skills and experience base of its practitioners.

This modelling short-course provides basic practical skills which establish a foundation for further research or facilitate critical appraisal of mathematical modelling appearing in the scientific and grey literature. A typical student will have studied the basics of infectious disease modelling and will have some preliminary (online or otherwise) training or aptitude in the R programming language.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING

PRISM2 is offering up to five scholarships for outstanding students to attend the five-day modelling short course held at Oxford University from September 23rd – 27th, 2019. The scholarships are designed to support students from the Asia-Pacific region. Funding will be provided to cover course registration fees as well as international travel and accommodation expenses (approx. 7,000 AUD) with the precise amount to be negotiated upon offer. Additional expenses for Visas, insurance, etc. are expected to be covered by the student’s host institution.

COURSE ATTENDANCE

Places are also available for self-funded students with course registration now open (see https://www.tropicalmedicine.ox.ac.uk/study-with-us/mmid-course). Details of the various course/accommodation options are provided on the course website. A discounted rate of 3,000 GBP has been offered to PRISM2 members for a package that includes:

  • Course registration and materials
  • 5 nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation in a single occupancy en-suite room at the course venue, St Anne’s College, University of Oxford
  • Lunch Monday to Friday and dinner on Monday and Thursday evenings

APPLICATIONS

The scholarship offer is part of a competitive scheme run through the PRISM2 network and students must provide a CV and 200 word (max) cover letter outlining their reason for applying for funding and how the successful completion of this course will contribute to their current studies and future career aspirations.
